re: unveiled women invite rape
Back1) I don't mean any disrespect for muslims or Pakistani culture. This is in response to videos / people on YouTube who claim that unveiled women are inviting rapes. I'm just pointing out the harmful side of their arguments. They might be trying to scare girls into wearing hijabs, but the result is that girls end up believing that they are to be blamed, should they (God forbid) end up being raped. Studies have shown that rapists rape, not because the girls were too beautiful, but because they have problems. Sadly, in some cultures, the girls end up being blamed for the rapes, and get re-victimized. These people might mean well - trying to get their girls wear hijabs or promote their religious practice as an advantage - but by saying "unveiled women invite rape", they are being very unfair to the girls, esp. rape victims. 2) There's a disturbing article in New York Times titled "In Rape Case, French Youth Takes On Dubai" (Oct 31,2007). In that articles, a 15 year old French boy was gang raped by pedophile Arab men. 6th paragraph reads: The authorities [in Dubai] not only discouraged Alex from pressing charges, he, his family and French diplomats say; they [Dubai authorities] raised the possibility of charging him with criminal homosexual activity,... 3) Not only rape victims are silenced, other things that go on under the veil is denied by the official mulim bodies. There's a NY times article "Gay Muslims Find Freedom, of a Sort, in the U.S." (Nov 7, 2007) It says "These governments (in islamic countries) are prone to label homosexuality a Western phenomenon,..." while it may not be necessarily so. My friends from islamic countries tell me that a lot of rape, sodomy, child abuse of all sorts go on there, but they simply cannot report these because the victims will be blamed and the perpetrators go unpunished. 4) Another recent headline a girl known as "the Qatif girl" gets sentenced for 90 lashes for being raped by 7 men. This sentence was deemed "too lenient" and was later changed to 200 lashes....
