This woman's life ended as a terrible tragedy. She committed suicide, I think mostly due to allegations by the Belgian Government for tax evasion. Though I think the Catholic Church may have had something to do with it as well.

Jeannine Deckers had to make a remake of this song in 1982, because the Belgian tax autority wanted her to pay tax of the 1962-song, but her monestary took all the profit. It didn't become a hit and she commited suicide 3 years later. Sad song...

You have got to be kidding! How can you generalize about dog lovers/cat lovers! What does that have to do with this song??? This song was popular not because of the lyrics but because of the melody which is still very 'catchy'. Put different words to it and it will still be significant. If you translate the words, they mean little to Americans --they are very religious. If this song were translated, it wouldn't have been popular here.
