Nobody knows if there is an afterlife or not but it's nice to think there is, have something to look foward to. It doesn't matter if there is a god or not but if you do believe then you will find it easier to accept death and if you don't go to crazy with your religious ideas, having a religion can make your life a lot happier.
I personaly find it kind of deperssing to think that when you die that is it.
